Top 10 Anime Endings of 2009

As I did last year, here is the list of what I thought the top 10 anime EDs of 2009 were. Enjoy!

10. “Kimi ni, Mune Kyun” by Yu Kobayashi, Asami Sanada and Marina Inoue – Maria Holic ED

This was kind an odd ED, though it probably fit the series in that regard.  It kind of grew on me, though, after a while.

9. “Hajimari no Asa ni Hikari Are” by midori – Shangri-la ED

I’m kind of surprised this landed as low as it did.  I guess it says something about the quality of the EDs this past year.

8. “Transparent” by KOKIA – Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom ED2

Like KOKIA’s OP for the same series, this one is somewhat eerie, and as a result, fits the series well

7. “Zetsubou Restaurant” by Zetsubou Shoujotachi – Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei ED1

This is kind of a funny ED.  I’ve never seen any of these series, though it kinda almost makes me want to

6. “Link” by angela – Asura Cryin’ ED1

Another good song by angela.  Many of the songs for this show were good, and this was the best one, but the only one to make the lists.

5. “Koi no Uta” by Haruka TomatsuShinkyoku Soukai Polyphonica Crimson S ED

This is kind of a nice, soft but feel-good-like song, with interesting animation to add to it.

4. “BACCHIKOI!!!” by DEV PARADE – Naurto Shippuden ED8

Yes, I even check out OPs and EDs for shows like Naruto when doing this list.  For once, they had one which was not only good enough to make a list, but high on the list.  This ED is just hilarious to me, even though I’ve never watched the show.

3. “Blue sky, True sky” by Aira Yuhki – Tears to Tiara ED1

This was a tough choice for the #3 spot, but I think this song was, overall, a bit better quality.

2. “Don’t say ”lazy”” by Yoko Hikasa with Aki Toyosaki, Satomi Satou and Minako Kotobuki – K-ON ED

This song was a pretty easy choice for #2.  The show might not have been that great, but it did have some good music.

1. “Hikari to Yami to Toki no Hate” by Ceui – Sora wo Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai ED

I melt whenever I hear this.  This was a no-brainer as #1 on my list.

Winter Anime Impressions – Meta Post

Birdy Season 2 doesn't reset the world like other sequels would

This is a pretty strong season of anime if you include the sequels and even if you don’t, there is still a few shows that could turn out to be real winners.

Of the sequels, Birdy the Mighty Decode 2 is showing the most improvement over it’s predecessor. I thought the first season was pretty good (gave it an 11/12 A+) but the first three episodes of this season are a great improvement on that. I’d even go so far to say that Birdy Season 2 is the most impressive show that started this season. I recommend this to anyone looking for a good show from this season to watch, even if that means going back to watch the first season.

Maria+Holic has been really hit-n-miss so far. My favorite parts have been when Maria and his maid have been onscreen but when they aren’t, the show loses much of it’s humor and interest. Also, the visual style of the show seems almost timid when compared to Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei. So far I’ve been giving the show a bit of slack because it’s been the beginning but my patience is starting to wane as the show continues to underperform.

weekly10635

Two shows that I’m kinda surprised that I’m still liking are Asu no Yoichi and Sora o Kakeru Shoujo. Asu no Yoichi has continued to be enjoyable even though it’s rather generic and clichéd. Now that I’m 5 episodes in, I find that I haven’t gotten tired of it yet so I’ll probably watch the whole thing. As for Sora o Kakeru Shoujo aka Sorakake Girl, I like the characters a lot as well as the show’s somewhat odd sense of humor. I still don’t know where the story is going but at this point, I don’t care.

The last thing I wanted to mention is that I know there are many anime fans out there that love hearing the Japanese butcher English. Chrome Shelled Regios has had whole scenes done in English (end of episode 3 and the beginning of episodes 4 & 5) by voice actors that obviously don’t know English. I hope they continue with these scenes because I get a good laugh from them. The show, as a whole, has only been decent so far - showing a bit of promise but not much.

Winter Anime Impressions – Munto TV

winter10357

Continuing my impressions of the new winter season is the new show from KyoAni – Sora wo Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Seikei or just Munto. The original OVA, from 2003 and 2005, is the only show of KyoAni that I haven’t seen and it is also KyoAni’s only original work. When I realized that the tv series was going to run in the winter season, instead of spring like it was initially reported, it became my most anticipated show of the new season.

Rating: 12/12 Perfect

A lot of ground was covered dealing with the story in this first episode. Two realms exist – the heavenly realm and Earth – but, while only Yumemi can see the heavenly realm above the clouds, people of the heavenly realm see earth as a dry, lifeless desert. The heavenly realm’s existence is tied to the availability of Akuto which was thought to be limitless but is actually limited. When the heavenly realm found this out, they became miserly and only used enough Akuto to keep the realm going. One kingdom within the heavenly realm is led by a young king named Munto and they seek the means to make the heavenly realm safe. Their quest, though, is using more Akuto then the other kingdoms like so the other kingdoms have united to destroy Munto’s kingdom. Munto finds out that he needs to find Yumemi, aka the Girl of Destiny, to save the heavenly realm and he leaves to find Yumemi on Earth. Yumemi is a normal 13-year girl except for her ability to see the heavenly realm and she has two friends, Ichiko and Suzume. In this episode we learn that Suzume is going to marry a kid that’s known as a delinquent tomorrow, much to the shock of Yumemi and Ichiko.

I tried hard to not read any reactions until I had the chance to watch it myself but I was only partially successful. One reaction I saw on a few blogs was complaining about the animation quality (with screenshots taken out of context to “prove” their point) but after watching the first episode I have to strongly disagree.

The softer, watercolor style used is very similar to slice-of-life shows like Sketchbook, Natsume’s Book of Friends, and Potemayo. None of these shows are criticized for their animation style; instead, most of these shows have praised. I think this style is more harmonious with the intention to show Yumemi as a normal person, living a normal life. Just imagine if Munto looked like Kaiba, Gits:SAC, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei or Gurren Lagann – it would feel like a totally different show. Yumemi’s walk to school with her friends just after a rainstorm was extremely beautiful and jaw-dropping in it’s own ways. It looked liked the trio was walking through a dream with a mirror world at their feet. And the style did lose it’s watercolor feel and gained a slightly more realistic feel when the show focused on other people like when Gass was fighting or when the Council of Elders where plotting the destruction of Munto’s Kingdom.

Original productions like Gurren Lagann, Michiko to Hatchin and Munto always get me excited because we don’t know where the show will go. I like the feeling of not knowing and having no way to know how the many story threads are connected before we get to that part of the story. Is the drama with Yumemi’s friend marrying a supposed delinquent connected to saving the Heavenly Realm? How is Yumemi special and will she be able to help Munto? No one knows for sure and thus there’s the potential for superb excellence from this show.

Another reason I also like original productions is that I can guess about future events based on clues that get dropped and not have to be worried about looking silly because no one will know the answer for several weeks. Already in this episode of Munto, there are several interesting hints dropped in the show and in the OP/ED animation. For example, I think time manipulation will appear in this show. I’m basing this off of seeing young versions of Yumemi and her two friends appearing in the opening. Also, King Munto mentions being restricted by some sort of space/time boundary from reaching Yumemi. And finally, if the boy that’s going to marry Yumemi’s friend said he grew up alone, why is he shown in the ending having a party this Yumemi and one of her friends at a much younger age?

Overall this was a very solid opening episode and while it didn’t quite impress me as much as say Rideback, the story and it’s possibilities really drew me in and really make me anxious to see what happens. The characters seem very likeable, especially Yumemi and Gass. The voice actors all did a good job with my current favorite being Daisuke Ono as Munto. The fight scene with Gass was well done and showcased KyoAni’s smooth animation skills – I’m hoping to see more such scenes.

Winter 2009 Update – KyoAni’s Munto TV series: Now, Not Later

top2082cc83r83s815b

Like the title says, it know appears that KyoAni’s Munto TV series, aka Sora o Miageru Shoujo no Hitomi ni Utsuru Sekai, will be starting January 14 and not in the spring. Since I haven’t seen many previews, including my own, mention this show and because this will be KyoAni’s first original tv series, I thought I should go more in-depth.

Official Site, Wiki entry

One of the first things that entered my mind when I realized this show was going to air in the winter season was this will mark the first time that KyoAni is doing two television shows at the same time. At this fact might bode well for those fans, including myself, that are waiting for a second season of Haruhi and more Full Metal Panic.

Here’s the staff and seiyuu list

Director, Series Composition, Screenplay: Yoshiji Kigami - directed the Munto OVAs

Music: Satoru Kousaki - music for Haruhi, Lucky Star, and Kannagi

Art Director: Seiki Tamura - art director for Michiko to Hatchin, Lucky Star, Munto, Haruhi

Takashi Tobe : Kaoru Mizuhara - Yomi Isayama (Ga-Rei: Zero), Misao Kusakabe (Lucky Star)

Nozomi Hidaka : Kikuko Inoue - Belldandy (Ah! My Goddess), Sanae Furukawa (Clannad), Uraha (Air)

Guridori : Minoru Shiraishi - Taniguchi (Haruhi), Minoru Shiraishi (Lucky Star)

Gntarl : Norio Wakamoto - Nabuu Brothers (Ga-Rei: Zero), Narrator (Hayate the Combat Butler)

The original OVAs are the only thing of Kyoto Animation that I haven’t seen. My only knowledge of the OVAs come from this awesome AMV (follow the link to download it and watch it below).

It seems like it could be a very interesting show and I’d imagine that Kyoto Animation will work hard to make sure that it’s first original TV series will be a success. And lastly the pictures where taken from the official website.
