I am a spoilerphobe

Posted by Author | Anime, Anime Review, Janette, Manga Review | Wednesday 30 September 2009 7:50 pm

I would like to take a few minutes to reveal a few things about myself. One, I am a huge spoilerphobe and try really hard to prevent from being spoiled. Two, I have seen very little anime dated from the past 5 years or played any visual novels beyond Katawa Shoujo. Three, I’m a little tired of people posting spoilers for me in the comments when I’ve tried pretty hard to avoid them.

So please do not post spoilers in your comments. Do not tell me about Maria in Umineko. Do not spoil Fate/Stay Night for me, especially if it’s to prove your point that I should know better and not be surprised by the ending in CANAAN, even though it was my first Type Moon show. Even if it’s been out for awhile, I might still be planning to watch it.

Which leads into my next point. I have had different life experiences and different anime viewing experiences then all of you. I also have different views on things, different hobbies, different interests. Please don’t tell me how ‘How can I not realize this?, or ‘Don’t I know better?’ and proceed to point out I’m obviously stupid. I do make mistakes, I am human, and I have nothing wrong with them being pointed out, but it makes a big difference if you do so in a mature matter or just make yourself sound like a condescending fanbrats. There is enough elitism in fandom. Don’t try to add to it

Jaded blogger had a bad day, is feeling jaded, and now going to go sulk.

Top picks Summer 2009 Part 1: Cast and Character Awards

Posted by Author | Anime Review, Aoi Hana, Janette, Manga Review, Sora no Manimani, Umineko no Naku Koro ni, awards, haruhi | Tuesday 29 September 2009 7:38 pm

Again, credit goes to The Null Set for the idea and the catagories. Check the blog out!

And without futher to do, the winners.

bannervocaloid-5-2

Best Female Main Character

Winner: Alice from Pandora Hearts

Our ever cheerful Alice.

Our ever cheerful Alice.

Alice, who has been my fandom obsession for the past two seasons, takes the award for best female main character. The monstrous chain proved to a surprisingly complex character. Alice may have a tough exterior, but inside she was a rather lonely insecure person. She was also rather childish and playful. Still, unlike Oz who tended to be emo about his insecurities, she fought to overcome them, being blunt and straightforward with what she wanted. Not to mention her quite strong obsession with food.

Best Male Main Character

Winner: Battler from Umineko

 54378

Any guy who has the line of ‘Slice up those cowtits and make me a sandwich,” is a pretty awesome guy. I rather like Battler have a character, he’s clever and tough, but he’s not perfect, as shown by his shameful loss in episode II of Umineko. Battler also shows himself as probably the only character in Umineko who can keep his head screwed on straight when everyone else is losing it.

Best Supporting Character

Winner: Shannon from Umineko

Runner-up: Itsuki from Haruhi and Break from Pandora Hearts

shannon

I place her as a supporting character because I view all the characters not in the metaworld as supporting character. I personally really like Shannon, her fighting spirit impresses me, as does her willingness to change her own destiny rather then accept it. Shannon also refuses to let Beatrice break her, choosing to treasure what she has at the end, rather then grieve over what she lost. Not to mention a yummy tattoo on her upper thigh.

It was hard to choose her over Itsuki from Haruhi and Break from Pandora Hearts. Itsuki is just an entertaining character who never fails to get an interesting response from Kyon. His manner of approaching problems is also unique, it’s not often in anime we get a good example of passive-aggressive character. Break is also a unique character, often hiding a very intelligent self under the mask of a complete clown. One of the interesting parts of Pandora Hearts was watching Oz manage to unravel who this man was.

Best Couple

Winner: Fumi and Akira from Aoi Hana

 aoi_hana_v01_000

I know Fumi and Akira are not a canon couple, but the canon couples this season really didn’t appeal to me. There was the necrophilia couple in CANAAN, Akiko and her fiancée, Sugimoto and Fumi, as well as the Umineko couples.

Fumi and Akira are horribly cute, with the many activities they do together that feels very couple like, such as going to the movies, and their sleepovers together. The two also contrast each other very well, the quiet Fumi contrasted with the energetic Akira. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen a couple that invoked so many ‘D’awww’ moments.

 Best Character Ability/Power

Winner: Mikuru Beam!

 10059927a5

While it may not be the most practical power, and while people could argue that there were cooler powers this season, I’ve always wanted to shoot laser beams out of my eyes. Have a character with no idea how to control said power randomly shooting laser beams is a recipe for win in my book.

Best Cast of Characters

Winner: Sora no Manimani

 soranomanimani

Sa no Manimani gives a cast of lovable and thoroughly enjoyable characters. We’re given not only the members of the clubs, which includes an anemic President, but the two-sided head of the student council, the astronomy network, the museum staff, and so many more. All of these characters never fail to entertain, and receive a decent amount of screentime for a large cast in a 12 episode anime.

Best Character Development

Winner: Pandora Hearts

 pandora_hearts

While there were a fair amount of characters that didn’t get much screentime, most of the ones that did grew and changed as characters. Although near the end of the series that tried to hit you over the head with how much the characters developed, it was indeed interesting to see how much the characters changed from point a to point b. The characters and the character development was the main draw to Pandora Hearts, and was done pretty well. It was enough to make up for lacking art and at times confusing storyline.

Best Character Development of a Single Character

Winner: Saku from Sora no Manimani

 soranomanimani2

Watching Saku change as a character is a very interesting experience. He goes from a person closed off from the world and solely involved in books to a person openly interacting with the world around him, and noticing what’s happening. The metamorphous is startling, and beautiful to watch, like a caterpillar becoming a butterfly.

Tops Picks Summer 2009-Preaward, the everyone wins awards

Alright, I wanted to do an awards for the summer season, based on the awards that The Null Set always does. But I’m one of those people who wants to give everyone an award, and I thought this be a good way to introduce all the canidates for the catogories. So without further to do, let’s give out the awards.

Aoi Hana: The ‘most sudden growth of a backbone’ award
One of the best moments in Aoi Hana is when Fumi stands up for herself and turns on Sugimoto. Well done Fumi!

Baseball Playing Girls-The ‘awkward’ award

Koume and Akiko were told they had to become like man and wife. Nuff said.

CANAAN-The ‘got me the most interestings comments and pingbacks’ award
CANAAN was apparently serious business this season! From angry fanbrats to rather serious comments, CANNAN blog posts never made my day boring.

Cross Game-The ‘cutest minor character’ award

I'd hit that so hard.

I'd hit that so hard.

Haruhi-The ‘most epic fanwank award’

There was no lack of fanwank in this season of Haruhi, especially with Endless Eight. It was all very entertaining.

There was no lack of fanwank in this season of Haruhi, especially with Endless Eight. It was all very entertaining.

NEEDLESS- The ‘anime that pratically makes motivational posters itself’ award
Usually, one has to wrack their brain for a clever comment to put with a motivational poster. Not with this shows odd sense of humor.

motivatorfd57a033cdda553c5cc7be4809862f590514d021

Pandora Hearts- The ‘most ridiculous number of outfits’ award
The 27 dresses episode showed Alice in a ridiculous number of outfits, but we got to see Alice in more outfits then that. From a schoolgirl to a opera outfit to a lovely nightgown, Alice sported more outfits then the typical anime character.

Sora no Manimani-The ‘best references to other anime’ award
Sora no Manimani wasn’t afraid to reference other anime, from the older and kinda obscure Galaxy Express 999 and Rose of Versalies to DBZ, their wasn’t plently to fangirl over.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.o-The ‘best ending’ award
Not only was this season fairly lacking in the good ending catogory(although to be fair, I haven’t seen the end to Sora no Manimani or Baseball Playing Girls yet), Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 did a really good job wrapping up the show, ending on a strong note.

Umineko-The ‘creepiest loli’ award

motivatord13a7579042e10f1e01ee8127dbe68aac5ee6aeb

On top of that, she wants to be eaten by her mother…

Pandora Hearts episode 25

Posted by Author | Anime Review, Janette, Manga Review, Pandora Hearts | Monday 28 September 2009 2:02 am

This didn’t really feel like the last episode of a series.

Ooh...pretty.

Ooh...pretty.

Thus, undoing all of Elliot's work.

Thus, undoing all of Elliot's work.

It did restate have Oz has grown and changed as a person. Otherwise, the episode felt more like a transaction into a second season rather then the end of a series, with the many loose ends that have been left undone. I think while Xebec isn’t going to promise anything, it certainty wants to keep the possibility of a second season open. Well, a girl can hope, can’t she?

Oz is showing the first signs of puberty. Next, we'll be hearing his voice crack.

Although I will do a final impression post later, I will sorely miss my Alice fix every week.

I'd like to think something romantic happened here, such as hand holding, or a kiss.

CANAAN episode 11+12

Posted by Author | Anime Review, CANAAN, Janette, Manga Review | Monday 28 September 2009 12:02 am

Dun dun dun, it’s the showdown between Alphard and Canaan.

Alphard makes me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside~

Alphard makes me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside~

I did get the fight I was hoping for, and it was as awesome as I was hoping. Alphard did end up losing a few points in my book. After engineering the whole thing, her ‘Oh I’m not good enough so I’m going to run away’ stunt didn’t impress much. What sort of true warrior pulls that crap? Well, I suppose one that wants to survive, but still.

Otherwise, the ending was a real disappointment. I wanted a happy lesbian ending with Maria and Canaan, not the whole, ‘we’re not equal and can’t be together’ idea. One word. Lame. We spent an entire series watching their relationship blossom just to get that? Asdfghjkl. It’s as if after they’ve done this farfetched story, they want to send a deep, serious, real to life message to the audience. With the way this series played out, it just didn’t work.

Despite Alphard’s stunt, she did still manage to stay very classy, and somehow, alive. I liked how it was obvious that her past and allowing hate to consume her shape her as a person. I’m not going to sit here and say CANAAN was one of the best series ever, but I think she was definitely one of my favorite villains ever, and these past couple episodes just solidified that for me.

Sora no Manimani episode 11

Posted by Author | Anime Review, Janette, Manga Review, Sora no Manimani | Sunday 27 September 2009 12:47 am

I think this scene made my day.

soranomanimani1201

I really have nothing else to say, so let’s take a look at Mihoshi’s speed building skills when it comes to snowman…

Seriously, she built that in at max, five minutes. No wonder they had impressive snow sculptures by the end of the day.

Oh, and kids, never leave a camp without telling someone. Ever.

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0-Finally, final impressions

Posted by Author | Anime Review, Janette, Manga Review, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 | Saturday 26 September 2009 2:51 am

I had to think about what I wanted to say for my final impression for quite a bit. Nothing seemed to click, and a lot of rough drafts got thrown out simply because something didn’t fit. Something about the show bugged me but I couldn’t put my finger on it. Then Steelbound of The Null Set posted about his thoughts on Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 that emulated my feelings perfectly(http://thenullset.wordpress.com/2009/09/24/thoughts-on-tokyo-magnitude-8-0/#more-4963). To me inparticular though, it didn’t feel real, but rather contrived instead. The characters were also fairly boring.

I still will stick by the opinion though that those robots were absolutely adorable.

One aspect of Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 that I came to realize is that not much is revealed in the characters words so much as their actions. Imagery is used to inform the viewer, and there was a lot of symbolism. While this was very cool, I tend to be very bad at symbolism, as well as a lot of stuff going straight over my head.

Probably what I got out of this show most of not the actual show, but the fandom surrounding it. The show didn’t really click with me since episode 1, and I never expected to love it, but it was a lot of fun to hear everyone’s comments and read their blog posts about each episode. I really felt like I was a part of something for once rather then just looking in from the outside <strike>pointing and laughing</strike>. Thanks for the fun ride guys.

Would I rewatch this? No.

Sora no Manimani 10

Posted by Author | Anime Review, Janette, Manga Review, Sora no Manimani | Saturday 26 September 2009 1:38 am

Such a fulfilling episode, emotional and then funny.

Aww!

Aww!

The first half of the episode revealed that Mihoshi’s dad is dead, something that’s been hinted at heavily at this point. I liked how they handled it, without a huge amount of angst, but they didn’t downplay it either.

Thoughts on Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Posted by Author | Anime, Anime Review, Manga Review, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, War of the Worlds, anime rants/views, series review | Friday 25 September 2009 2:28 am

tm828572

I finished Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 a couple of days ago (watching episodes 10 and 11 together) and it’s left me in a mood. I really wanted to like this show and for small stretches of the series I did but my issues with it kept piling up and the twist at the end was too much.

I normally keep my posts spoiler-free for my readers but I felt I had to diagram my exact thoughts on this show which require huge spoilers. So, for those readers that don’t want to be spoiled, I’d suggest stopping here and waiting for my series review.

Let’s start with something positive. With the premise of the series – a huge earthquake hits Tokyo, several different angles could have been used for the series. They opted to show it through the eyes of a small number of normal people who is a good choice since it allows the viewer to form emotional attachments that make the series more compelling. Another show that did this as well was the recent adaptation of War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise and if one thinks about it and strips the Martians out, they’re left with a show that’s very similar to Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 in terms of structure.

Comparing it to War of the Worlds, however, starts in on my problems with the show. A key difference between War of the Worlds (WotW) and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 (TM:8) is the length of the show. WotW ran for 117 minutes (~2 hours) and TM:8 ran for 220 minutes (~3.7 hours) if you count actual show time. The result was that WotW did not pad the experience and TM:8 had too. And I’m not talking about how long it took to get to the actual earthquake because establishing characters so we care about them is essential if the animators aren’t going for the epic disaster/destruction angle. I’m talking about having the main characters go to Mari’s office in episode 6, the “gee-whiz aren’t robots great” episode 7, the “let’s drag out the fate of Mari’s family for as long as possible in episode 9, and the “let’s mess the viewer’s mind and stop telling a coherent story so we can see how long we can drag Yuuki’s death out because we need a twist” in episodes 8-10 as prime offenders. So if this had been done as a movie, I think it would have worked much better.

Speaking of episodes 6 and 7, that reminds me of another issue I had with the show. Too much of the series was built off of coincidence and bad/implausible decision making. For coincidences we have how the bridge decides to fall just as the main characters are in position to have there life’s in peril but luckily the characters got on the boat they did because the other one got sunk by the tidal wave. Or how Tokyo Tower decides to fall just as two of the main characters happen to be standing where their lives would be put in danger. Or when at the end of episode 8, the no-longer-with-us Yuuki says that he can hold his bag and, luckily for the animators, Mirai says that she can hold the bag for him.

Or how when the main characters finally get to Mari’s house and can’t find the grandma and child they head to the makeshift morgue and there just happens to an unidentified 50-year-old woman and 4-year-old girl found in the area where Mari lives. It turns out that these 2 aren’t Mari’s family because Mari’s family is okay but think about the coincidences that lead to this turn of events. First these two unidentified people must have been found together because they were placed together in the morgue and they just happen to match the age, gender, and haircut of Mari’s missing family members and happen to live in the same neighborhood. What are the chances? And how do the morgue workers know these unidentified people are in fact 50 and 4 (presumably the same ages as Mari’s family) when they obviously have no identification on them.

Then there’s the bad/implausible decision making by the characters. Let’s start with Yuuki getting beaned in the head by Tokyo Tower. A sizable chunk of masonry has just gotten Old Testament on Yuuki’s skull, leaving a sizable bump and no one thinks to have it checked out ?!?!! Seriously. I’m supposed to believe citizens of a country where earthquakes are common are not aware of the dangers of blunt head trauma. I can’t help but think that a prompt CAT scan could have saved Yuuki’s life.

Or there’s the frankly very implausible turn of events where Mari turns down the chance for someone to look after Mirai and Yuuki and a motorcycle so she could quickly check to see if her own family is okay. I can understand Mari’s desire to look after Mirai and Yuuki but I’m supposed to believe a mother passes up the chance to see if her own child and mother are alive. Especially when someone you obviously trust is willing to look after the two for the hour or two it will take to check. And am I to believe that Kento’s parent(s) allow Kento to run all over creation chasing robots when aftershocks are still happening and buildings are still falling down? Do the Darwin Awards cover animated characters?

tm811980

By the end of episode 9, I had the inkling I was going to write a post like this but at that point I was going to focus on how the show was pulling it’s punches. I was angry over how they teased us with the fate of Mari’s family then ultimately couldn’t kill the characters off. I decided at this point that Yuuki’s and Mirai’s parents where alive because the show didn’t have the guts to actually kill anyone off. Turned out I was right about the parents but not about the show not killing anyone important. (I figured something was up with episode 8 but since I didn’t check the online chatter, I didn’t quite put it together.)

I still think it could be argued that Bones pulled it’s punches but it’s not as clear cut and how they treated Yuuki’s death is a bigger issue so I’ll leave that alone for now.

The fact that they killed Yuuki and the way they handled it was obviously their way to put a twist into the show because they felt (as did I, even early on) that merely showing the earthquake and following the characters home made the show completely predictable and without dramatic tension, the viewer has little reason to tune in week after to week. How they handled it was, in my opinion, about as good as if they used the “it was all a dream” twist.

And my disposition isn’t helped when it looks like Bones actively tried to hide Yuuki’s status until they could reach the maximum emotional effect and give themselves the twist. I say actively because even with how episode 8 was done, there would be one really telling difference between Yuuki the ghost and Yuuki the person – a shadow. And in episode 11, after Mirai realizes the truth about Yuuki, the animators do a scene where the viewer (and Mirai) sees that he no longer casts a shadow. Great but what about earlier? A check of the time between Yuuki’s death and this scene shows that Yuuki cast a shadow. See below.

tm822772

Here's a shadow

tm824311

and here too

tm827175

and here as well

tm805593

But now there's no shadow

tm806025

Nor here

And, of course, this is on top of the standard coincidences and lucky turn of events that keep Mirai in the dark for so long. I’ll give Bones the combo of shock over Yuuki’s death making her forget it happened and the appearance of ghost Yuuki to allow Mirai the belief that her now deceased brother was not deceased. However, this belief should have been found out rather quickly and not dragged out for another 2 episodes. For starters, what happened to the death certificate that Mari was given? If you were Mari, wouldn’t you give it to Mirai? Also, if you were Mari, and Mirai started to act like her brother was still alive and next to her – wouldn’t you do something? Even if you instantly thought that it could be his spirit, wouldn’t you get her admitted into the hospital to make sure nothing was wrong with Mirai as well? I’d be real sure that I wouldn’t have to meet Mirai and Yuuki’s parents and tell them that both of their kids were killed while I was watching them. Also we have to believe that Mari never once mentioned Yuuki passing while talking to Mirai or that Yuuki was able to make it look like he still needed to eat, use the restroom, etc. or that Mari never did something that tipped Mirai off that she could no longer see Yuuki.

Then there’s the question of if Yuuki should have been killed off in the first place. In most situations I feel the only time an anime character should be killed is if there’s a good reason for that death. Of course, there’s exceptions and in real life people die all the time without a “reason”. Since Mirai had already learned the lesson about being thankful for the blessings that she has before Yuuki got sick, I’d be inclined to say no. However, I do think someone major had to die to help get the point across about how bad the earthquake was but Bones could have done a better job of communicating the “lesson” we’re supposed to have gotten. Yuuki’s name means hope and Mirai’s name means future, so as the show stands, hope is a lying little brother who manipulates the future into moving forward.

There are better ways they could have handled the ending. For instance, one could keep the shock/ghost Yuuki angle but clearly show the audience that this is in fact what’s going on. From there, I’d have Mirai find the truth out from either Yuuki being up-front about things or from Mari. Mirai would breakdown, maybe run away from Mirai because she decides that she can’t face her mom after allowing her brother to die but Yuuki could talk enough sense into her to get to continue moving forward. Then reunite Mirai and Mari and have Mirai push the increasingly worried Mari to actually go home to find out what happened to her family. From there, we could still have Yuuki use his “knowledge-from-beyond the grave” to find Mari’s family and Mari getting stuck to look after her Mom. And now that Mirai knows the truth, there’s no need for the extensively long reveal, instead Mirai and ghost Yuuki could go home and from there we could get the final good-bye to Yuuki and the montage of his life that had so many (including myself) shedding manly, not-so-manly, and normal tears over.

And I’m sure other people could come up with even better endings. If there’s one weakness that Bones has shown for as long as I’ve known them is they have real problems with the endings of shows – think first Full Metal Alchemist series, Eureka 7, X’amd: Lost Memories, and The Daughter of Twenty Faces (with Soul Eater the only Bones series I liked how it was ended).

After saying all that, though, I still can’t call Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 a failure because I still cried over the montage of Yuuki’s life and I’m reminded that I need to be more thankful for the happiness in my life. So I guess Bones did something right.

Baseball Playing Girls episode 9

Posted by Author | Anime Review, Baseball Playing Girls (Taishou Yakyuu Musume), Janette, Manga Review | Thursday 24 September 2009 2:35 am

This episode was fairly interesting, and showed a little more depth then the past couple filler like episodes.

Sexist pigs.

Sexist pigs.

Interestingly enough, it’s no longer the girls having to fight the boys of the same age group to prove they can play baseball. Instead, they now have to fight with adults that it’s perfectly okay for girls to play baseball. This is something that of course is going to happen, as the girl’s parents will inevitably find out.

The whole issue went away pretty quickly, as a plot device in the form of the superintendent turned up and fixed it. Although I liked his point that they wouldn’t want to be known as the school scared to take on a bunch of girls.

Former sexist pig.

Former sexist pig.

We also get to see development in Akito’s fiancée, I think, when we see him stick up for the girl’s team. Whether he’s really changed, or is just be desperate to make up with Akito, I guess we’ll have to see.

Oh, Koume and her fiancée are so dang cute!

Nonsexist pigs get the girl.

Nonsexist pigs get the girl.

Hm.. I wonder where he put down the swimsuit and bloomers so he could scratch his cheek like that.

Stuffed in pocket temporarily? Transferred to other hand? Because it was made rather clear he gripped the two fabrics quite tightly… both right before this scene occurred and at the end of the episode when Tsubasa said so.

Sweet Blue Flowers (Aoi Hana) – Episode 11 [END]

Posted by Author | Anime Review, Manga Review, Sweet Blue Flowers | Wednesday 23 September 2009 10:09 pm

It’s the final episode of Sweet Blue Flowers, and will Fumi finally discover the answer to Yasuko’s question about who her first love was?

sbf11-00006 sbf11-00011 sbf11-00014
sbf11-00017 sbf11-00020 sbf11-00022

It’s time for the next semester of school to start again, and, after being late due to sleeping in, Akira talks about how quickly the summer seemed to pass by with Fumi on the train. At school, due to her membership in the Literacy Club, Fumi is roped into helping the library dispose of the old books in the library. However, spending so much time in the library is making Fumi remember her time with Yasuko. Kyoko, meanwhile, has started practicing drawing again with Kazusa, where she finds out that Yasuko is leaving to study abroad.

The next day after school, Fumi sees Yasuko on the train platform, but doesn’t say anything, and seems sad that Yasuko gets on the train to go home without saying anything to her. Afterwards, Fumi tells Akira that she thought she was over Yasuko, and says she’s not sure she understands herself, and Akira decides that the best medicine for Fumi’s down mood is to chow down on sweets.

Soon it’s almost Christmas, and Akira decides that everyone should get together for a Christmas Eve party, however, Kyoko is apparently unable to come. However Ko soon calls Akira up and asks her for the favor of asking her for help in picking out a gift for Kyoko, since she’s tired of all the normal ones Ko gives her. But while Akira and Ko are out looking at gifts, Fumi sees them and feels uncomfortable.

Back at her house, Fumi concludes that she doesn’t think Akira and Ko are dating, since she believes Akira would tell her if they were, but thinks that she wouldn’t mind if they did start dating, but she wonders to herself why she hid from them. That night, the girls throw their party and look at old pictures of Fumi and Akira, where the drama trio is shocked to find out that Fumi was the small one when they were younger. Fumi starts flipping through an old sketchbook of hers and finds a leaf taped to one page, and it seems to make her remember something.

Later in the party, Akira gets a text from Kyoko saying thanks for the present, since she found out she picked it due to her grilling Ko about it because it wasn’t something he would normally get. She tells Fumi, who is suddenly relieved that that’s all Akira and Ko were doing. After that the three girls leave, but not before Motegi gives Akira’s brother a note, asking him out.

That night, Fumi and Akira find that they can’t sleep, so they look outside to see that it’s snowed. The two decide to go look at the snowy trees in the party that they parted back in elementary school. Fumi then tells Akira that she’s sad that she never got a chance to go back to see their elementary school, so Akira asks if she wants to go visit it then. However, once there, Fumi teases Akira by deciding to look around the school, despite the fact that Akira finds empty schools at night creepy and scary. Fumi then finds an old passageway in the school and remembers that that’s where she got the flower – a blue flower – that was taped in the sketchbook, and remembered that her “first love” was Akira way back then.

And it is finished (and really seems so since it says “Fin” at the end, suggesting that we’re not going to get a second season or anything).

I kind of have mixed feelings about this episode. I suppose it was a good episode for the type of show this was, and at least started heading towards some conclusions, such as Fumi finally seemingly getting over Chizu, and Kyoko and Ko doing better in their relationship, and Yasuko going overseas for college.

However, in other ways, we never really resolved what the status of Akira and Fumi is. Fumi finally realized the answer to the question that Yasuko asked her when they broke up: “do you remember who your first love was?,” remembering that it was Akira way back in elementary school. However, I sort of felt that this could have been set up better. For example, the flower in the sketchbook could have, perhaps, been discovered earlier in the series instead of halfway through this episode, which made the whole situation feel sort of forced to me.

Also…so Fumi found out who her first love was. I mean, yay for sentimental purposes, I guess, and perhaps a realization by Fumi of who she really likes, but it didn’t really have much impact on the series since it came at the very end (barring a second season).

Despite those complaints, like I noted above, I guess this was overall a nice ending. I keep having to laugh at Motegi crushing on Akira’s brother, though. I can just see Akira’s face if she ever finds the two alone in his room lmao.

I’ll do a full review of this series later, but this seemed like a nice slow paced story which, even though wasn’t necessarily very eventful or fireworks filled, still seemed reasonably entertaining.

Cardcaptor Sakura – Episode 20

It’s Cardcaptor Sakura episode 20, and Meilin joins Sakura, Tomoyo, and Shaoran’s class as a new transfer student, and has a shocking pronouncement regarding Shaoran.

The morning at school, Sakura and Tomoyo recall the previous afternoon with Meilin rushing into Shaoran’s condo and booting the two of them out. Shaoran then shows up looking worn out and apprehensive. Mr. Terada then announces that Meilin is transferring into the class, and that she’s Shaoran’s cousin.

However, spotting Sakura trying to chat with Shaoran, Meilin rushes over and proclaims that Shaoran is her fiance. Shaoran attempts to weakly protest, but to no avail. Over lunch, Shaoran tries to convince Meilin to go back to Hong Kong, but she proclaims that she’s going to stay and help Shaoran catch the Clow Cards instead. During gym, the Meilin vs. Sakura battle really heats up as Meilin engages in a one-sided battle against Sakura in gymnastics, and loses anyway.

That evening, Sakura sees news that there have been several attacks on black-belt martial artists by a girl. The reports said that the girl appeared to challenge the black belts and was wearing weird clothes. This made Sakura suspect that it might be a Clow Card.

Sakura, Kero, and Tomoyo go out to find the card, only to run into Meilin. Suddenly the card shows up, which Kero identifies as the Fight card, and challenges Meilin. Meilin appears to hold her own to begin with, but soon Fight gets the advantage, and she’s saved by Shaoran showing up. It’s then revealed that Meilin had Wei use Shaoran’s compass to find the card, revealing that she has no magical powers of her own.

Fight then appears again and continues it’s fight with Meilin, but Fight soon gets the upper hand. Tomoyo remarks that the Fight card seems similar to the Power card from before, causing Sakura to try activating the Power card. She is then able to use it to knock Fight out, allowing her to seal it.

So we get our first big pieces of information about Meilin: she’s Shaoran’s cousin (though we don’t know how distant), declares that Shaoran is her fiance, and, despite being a Li, has absolutely no magical powers of her own, causing Shaoran quite a bit of trouble as she’s determined to help him capture Clow Cards.

We also tend to see a lot of cards coming in similar pairs, whether it’s Float and Fly, Fight and Power, or Shield and Sword. Also, now 20 episodes into the series, Sakura or Shaoran have now captured 21 cards (two episodes where Sakura got 2 cards – episode 1 with Windy and Fly, and episode 4 with Rain and Wood; and one episode where she didn’t catch any cards – episode 16).

Also, sorry for taking so long to post this. This got lost along with everything else in the delay. I’ll try to post episode 21 tomorrow, but I haven’t reviewed it yet so…we’ll see.
